The purpose of disinfecting dental impressions is to make them safe for handling before sending them to the laboratory for processing. Impressions can be made using alginates, silicones or other materials that lend themselves well to that particular purpose. In order to allow the laboratory to do precise work, form stability is critical. Prolonged exposure to liquid substances including disinfectants will increase the potential of deformations of the impressions. Disinfectants therefore need to offer a broad effective spectrum at shortest possible exposure times.
