Frequently Asked Questions
- What are the dangers associated with the norovirus?
The norovirus is a highly infectious virus which causes severe gastroenteritis. Its increasing prevalence among weakened individuals in hospitals, long-term care houses and other facilities presents a growing health concern. - If it is true that noroviruses are transmitted by food, water and via direct contact, why is it important to disinfect surfaces as a prophylactic measure?
Surfaces of all kind, especially those frequently exposed to hand contact, act as reservoirs of pathogens including the highly resistant strains of the norovirus. - Why do noroviruses have to be of any concern during the quick disinfection of surfaces?
The norovirus is quite resistant to alcohol-based disinfectants. Most alcoholic surface disinfectants on the market require more time to inactivate the virus than the 2 minutes it takes for the disinfectant to dry up. - Why is the flash point of alcoholic disinfectants of any importance?
The flash point is the lowest temperature at which the flammable liquid mixes with air and the risk of ignition increases. If this value is below 21ºC, the products have to be marked as „Flammable“ and there is increased fire danger during storage and use.
